| Description: | This 1992 Protocol is intended to supersede the International Convention on Civil Liability for Oil Pollution Damage (1969) as the governing regime on oil pollution. The Protocol extended the Convention to cover pollution damage caused in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of a State Party. Environmental damage compensation is limited to the costs of "reasonable measures" to reinstate the contaminated environment. The Protocol permits limitation of liability in certain circumstances, except for intentional or reckless acts causing damage. |
