Conclusion Date: 1970-11-14
Entry Into Force Date: 1972-04-24
Description: This UNESCO Convention is an early attempt to define cultural property in terms of its historical, archaeological, literary, scientific, and artistic importance, and to protect it by proscribing illicit trafficking. Party States agree to undertake legal measures to enforce prohibitions against illicit export or transfer of such property, in addition to institutional and educational measures for preserving it and for informing their citizenry about the cultural patrimony. The Convention calls on the Party States to participate in a concerted effort to respond to the call for assistance from any individual Party State whose cultural property is being pillaged.
