Description: This international agreement was negotiated as a side agreement to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to address environmental concerns raised by NAFTA. The agreement requires each Party to ensure that liberalization of trade and economic growth in North America would be accompanied by effective cooperation and continuous improvement in the environmental protection provided by each country.
The Agreement established a North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation in order to address regional enviromental concerns; help to prevent trade and environmental conflicts; and promote the effective enforcement of environmental law.
