Description: This convention established the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). The aim of the convention is to conserve marine life in the Southern Ocean. While recognizing the importance of protecting the integrity of the ecosystems in the oceans surrounding Antarctica, the convention also notes the "increased interest in the possibilities offered by the utilization of these resources" and includes "rational use" within the definition of "conservation."
Article 2 sets forth conservation principles. A secretariat and a Scientific Committee support the work of the CCAMLR.
