Description: The Charter sets forth the fundamentals of international economic relations, particularly between industrialized and developing countries, based on "equity, sovereign equality, interdependence, common interest and cooperation...". (Preamble) It declares that every State has the right to choose its own economic system and enjoy sovereignty over its own natural resources. The treatment of alien property and foreign investment is also covered. Among the duties of States are to promote world trade, development and disarmament, as well as the elimination of apartheid, colonialism and racial discrimination. The Charter was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1974.This document is available from the Official Document System (ODS) of the United Nations.
