In April 1948, 21 countries joined together to establish the Organization of American States and it is now made up of all 35 states in the Western Hemisphere. Its purposes are to strengthen the peace and security of the continent; to promote and consolidate representative democracy; to ensure the pacific settlement of disputes; to provide for common action on the part of its member states in the event of aggression; to seek the solution of political, juridical and economic problems that may arise among them; to promote, by cooperative action, its member states' economic, social and cultural development, and to achieve an effective limitation of conventional weapons.
