Description: In 1991 the General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled “Principles for the protection of persons with mental illness and the improvement of mental health care” (often referred to as “MI Principles”). These principles give guidance for the evaluation of States’ obligations in the context of institutionalized disabled persons, by prohibiting certain kinds of treatment such as sterilization and psychosurgery and other forms of irreversible medical “therapy” in the case of involuntary patients.
