Title: Vienna Convention on Succession of States in Respect of Treaties
Available From: http://untreaty.un.org/ilc/texts/instruments/english/conventions/3_2_1978.pdf
Conclusion Date: 1978-08-23
Entry Into Force Date: 1996-11-06
Description: Codified in response to the era of de-colonization, issues of state succession addressed in this treaty became even more important in the last decade of the 20th century with the dissolution of the USSR and the re-unification of Germany. The Vienna Convention, though in force, has not found wide acceptance. This site includes links to the text, abstract, status (through the United Nations Treaty Database) and Analytical Guide, the latter of which documents the development of the convention. Texts of conventions of related interest are also provided.
Legal Citation: 1946 UNTS 3; 17 ILM 1488 (1978); 72 AJIL 971 (1978)
