Description: The United Nations was founded at the end of World War II to "maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among states," and to "achieve international co-operation in solving international problems" as well as "promoting and encouraging respect for human rights..." (UN Charter, Article 1). From an original 51 in 1945, the UN now has more than 190 countries as members. Its Secretary-General, General Assembly and Security Council are based in New York. The UN's comprehensive site includes several useful tools including a "Official Web Site Locator for the UN System of Organizations" and an "International Law" section.
