Description: | The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (Art. 92, Charter). It functions as an independent court handling disputes between States and issues advisory opinions on various questions of law. The ICJ Statute, which was based on the Statute of the Permanent Court of International Justice, was adopted together with the UN Charter. Article 38 (1) of the Statute establishes the sources of international law which it applies: international conventions or treaties, customary international law, general principles of law recognized by civilized nations, and judicial decisions and teachings of highly qualified publicists. The ICJ established its seat at the Peace Palace in The Hague. The Court's fifteen judges and its procedures are governed by the Rules of the Court . |
