Description: On December 13, 2006 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Optional Protocol to the Convention. The Convention and Protocol are open for signature at the United Nations Headquarters beginning March 30, 2007. Article I of the Convention sets forth its purpose: “to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.” Disability is defined to include long-term physical, mental, intellectual, and sensory impairments.
