|Description:||This Agreement grew out of efforts in the 1960s, initiated by the United States, to create a global satellite communications system. (See the Agreement Establishing Interim Arrangements for a Global Commercial Communications Satellite System and Special Agreement, Aug. 20, 1964, 15 UST 1705, 514 UNTS 25.)
INTELSAT was the first inter-governmental organization established to develop, coordinate and operate a global telecommunications satellite system.
In 2001, Intelsat became a private corporation.
