Description: The countries comprising the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, established the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) "to promote and enhance mutual trade and economic cooperation among the Contracting States, through exchanging concessions in accordance with this Agreement." (Art.2, SAFTA) SAFTA is scheduled to enter into force on January 1, 2006 upon completion of all formalities, including ratification by all contracting parties. SAFTA shall supercede the Agreement on SAARC Preferential Trading Arrangement (SAPTA).
