Title: ASIL Insights: The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 Consolidates Seafarers Labour Instruments
Available From: http://www.asil.org/insights060913.cfm
Last Updated: 2006-09-13
Description: Authors Cleopatra Doumbia Henry, Dominick Devlin, and Moira L. McConnell note in this Insight that the Director-General of the International Labour Office, Dr. Juan Somavia, has characterized this Convention as making labour history.
They go on to explain that it "has taken the ILOs treaty-making activity since 1920 one stage further, in the sense that it reflects an international tripartite consensus on the standards needed to achieve fair globalization in the maritime sector." It covers "conditions of employment, hours of work and rest, accommodation, recreational facilities, food and catering, health protection, medical care, welfare and social security protection for seafarers, as well as the regulation of recruitment and placement services and flag State inspection systems."
