Description: This Protocol made possible the entry into force of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973. As the 1973 Convention had not yet entered into force, the 1978 MARPOL Protocol absorbed the parent convention. Thus, the two instruments are used together, and are referred to as MARPOL 73/78.
MARPOL 73/78 is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.
