Description: The Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS) was entered into to address concerns that "continuously high bycatch rates, habitat deterioration and anthropogenic disturbance are likely to jeopardise the existence of small cetaceans in the Baltic and North Seas. " (ASCOBANS web site.)
Cetaceans include whales, dolphins and porpoises. ASCOBANS creates a framework for cooperation in protection of these animals.
