| Description: | The Charter is both an international treaty and the constitution of the United Nations organization. It established the six major organs of the UN and their functions: General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council, International Court of Justice, and Secretariat. The Charter delineates the principles on which the UN is based, such as sovereign equality of States, and the limitations on the organization such as non-intervention in domestic affairs of States. It sets out the purposes of the UN which encompass maintenance of international peace and security, promotion of economic and social co-operation, and protection of human rights. Member states, which now include virtually every country in the world, agree by signing the Charter to the principles of non-use of force and peaceful settlement of disputes. |
