Description: The Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals was adopted in 1972 by the Antarctic Treaty Parties. The Convention covers all species of seals found in Antarctic waters and sets catch limits on on Crabeater, Leopard and Weddell seals. Additionally, the catching of Ross, Elephant and Fur seals is prohibited. This convention aims to to promote while at the same time achieving the protection, scientific study and rational use of Antarctic seals. More importantly, the Convention strives to maintain a satisfactory balance within the ecological system of the Antarctic.
