Description: The history of COMESA dates to December 1994 when it was created to replace the former Preferential Trade Area (PTA) which had existed from the earlier days of 1981. With twenty-one member states comprising a population of 385 million, COMESA seeks to promote trade in the African region. The COMESA web site provides a link to the 1993 COMESA Treaty. The site also provides information on such regional topics as food security and transport, trade and investment as well as links to news and publications.
