| Founded in 1949, the Council of Europe now has 45 member states, including 21 countries from Central and Eastern Europe. The aim of the council is to achieve a greater unity between its member. It acts as a human rights watchdog for Europe's post-communist democracies and assists these countries in carry out political, legal and constitutional reform. |
